5. "Let it Snow!"

Farley

Farley bent over, speaking into the huddle of men like a quarterback calling a play. "Berlin, you take Max and visit that fancy candle store. Conner wants a couple for each table, and if they don't have centerpieces there, go to the furniture store next to it, they more than likely will have some to choose from. Caleb and Asher, you are on games and candy. I'm thinking card games, board games, and that one with the dirty words for after the kids go to sleep. Do not get operation. That game is dumb, and I won't have it be played in The Den." His team didn't need to know that was because every single one of his siblings had easily beat him at that game every single time he'd played it as a child. "Don't you dare skimp on the candy. Let's think peppermint bark, toffees and for the love of God, do not forget the truffles. Oscar and I will take gift detail and pick up last-minute presents. Now, hands in and can I get a ho, ho, ho?" They all put their hands in, but only Caleb and Berlin gave him a "ho, ho, ho."

That was going to have to do.

Coming to the mall the day before Christmas Eve was a fool's mission. Farley was only lucky that Caleb and Berlin had agreed to help him. He grabbed Oscar's hand, and after giving his two comrades in war a reassuring smile, they stepped through the automatic double doors inside the bowels of their local mall.

Farley stared at their jam-packed trunk. Caleb was on one side while Berlin was on his other. "We did it," Farley whispered, in awe of all that they had accomplished. That morning, they'd woken up like boys, unaware of the horrors of the mall right before Christmas and now, they were men. They'd survived.

Staring at his spoils, Farley guessed this was how Vikings had felt. He might not have pillaged, but he had persisted. "Caleb, Asher told me how single-minded you were. How focused. You should be commended. And Berlin, don't think I didn't notice how you dominated that buy one get one free sale. You should be proud of yourselves, each and every one of you."

They gave each other pats on the back and turned to their alpha mates. Like Oscar, Asher and Max had been quickly reduced to grunts and hand gestures after entering.

At least Caleb and Berlin hadn't had to stop their mates from making a certain hand gesture, repeatedly. Still, they had checked every person off their list, had every gift wrapped and had gotten everything Conner had requested. There was nothing left but to put the presents under the tree. Farley released Caleb and Berlin from duty and reached for the first of the handles.

"Don't even think about grabbing one of those bags," Oscar ordered.

"I was light headed for one second," Farley replied. "That old lady's perfume was so strong, like a poisonous fog."

"I don't care.
